If you’re into coin collecting and want to get your hands on the truly rare coins, you should try your hand in ancient coin collecting. Ancient coin collecting involves collecting coins from way back when. This includes coins from governments that are no longer in power, such as the Roman Empire. These kinds of coins usually fetch high prices. Thus, ancient coin collecting can be a very costly venture. However, if you have the money and the time it takes to hunt down these rare treasures, then ancient coin collecting may be for you.

Rare Coins

Ancient coins are very rare. They were used at one time and then were never seen again. That means that most ancient coins are in the hands of collectors already. Either that or they are in a museum somewhere. Ancient coin collecting is done by buying and selling coins from other collectors, usually. Since collectors have all the coins, it just makes sense that you’d go to other collectors to find the ancient coins you’re looking for.

Coins Are Bought, Sold and Traded

Most collectors will let ancient coins go for a certain price. Some will even trade with other coins if you have something they’ve been looking for. These collectors can be found at trade shows, trade magazines and some can even be found after a short search on the internet. Of course, some people, when ancient coin collecting, don’t want to get rid of any of their coins. They’ve spent a lot of time building up their collection and don’t want to part with any of its precious pieces.

Ancient coin collecting is a slow process. It may take an entire lifetime to get a substantial ancient coin collection. However, if you have the time, the money and you know all the right people, then you might as well start ancient coin collecting. You’ll be amazed at all the ancient coins that are now in the hands of collectors. These coins were used in times long past. They were discontinued and they turned into rare pieces that are now sought after by die hard collectors. If you’re going to pursue ancient coin collecting, you should prepare yourself for trying to get collectors to part with such rare pieces of history. If you can do that then you might just succeed at ancient coin collecting.

Determining Coin Value

It makes sense to assume that the older a coin, greater will be its value. Wrong! Coin value is not necessarily dependent on its age. An ancient Roman coin might be much cheaper to buy than a nineteenth century American coin. Several factors determine coin value including rarity in occurrence, metal of composition, grade (i.e. condition of the coin at the time of purchase), and age.

Age of the Coin

While a centuries old coin might be an expensive item, age is not the determining factor of coin value. Some old coins are very hard to find and hence are in greater demand. But even younger coins that are not readily available might be as expensive or even more expensive than much older ones.

Condition of the Coin

Condition of a coin at the time of purchase is called its ‘grade’ and is judged by a Standard International Grading System. From poor condition of the coin to finer, these grades are listed as: poor, good, very good, fine, very fine, extremely fine, uncirculated and proof. Grade of a coin is an important criterion for determining coin value with lower grade coins falling cheaper than those higher on the grade scale. That is why the late 19th century and younger coins of the USA are cheap. An extremely fine grade coin can cast as much as ten times the value of a poor grade coin of the same age.

Rarity

Rarity is also an important determining factor of coin value. Rarity refers to the number of specimens of a particular coin available. While rare coins are generally costlier, the grade of the coin is more important in assessing the worth of the coin. Rarity is dependent on other factors, as well, such as the state of demand and supply. Many US coins are found in larger quantities than Indian coins of the same age. But the US coins are in great demand among the amateurs and hence coast much more than their Indian competitors. It is not very easy to determine rarity of coins and reference material should be exhausted before one can confidently determine the coin value of a particular item.

The coin market, like many other markets, is a tumultuous business. There might be great demand for one coin in the market and no demand for it after some time. To make a good purchase, it is important to be updated on coin value with reference to different types of coins. Coin catalogs and good coin magazines are helpful in updating on coin market.

Origin of Coins and Numismatists

The hobby of the coin collection has presently taken an extraordinarily unique shape. Every moment newer and newer people are joining the numismatic community and perhaps, the total numismatist population worldwide has surpassed a few million. Researchers have worked long and hard to conclude that the act of collecting coins was started by the father of the Renaissance – Francesco Petrarca, who has also written certain facts about his collections. The popes during the Renaissance period were highly interested in this hobby, which in their later phase gradually turned into a passion, and they used to collect coins for the art and value. However, evidence has also been unearthed regarding the fact that the Roman emperors used to pay prices higher than the face value for the coins that were not in circulation.
